Your Web Site Domain Name
A web site is an integral part of the effective marketing of your business.
Key objectives of a website should be:
- drive new business
- improve the customer experience
- reinforce branding
- enhance your name and image
Your logo and branding should be developed prior to the website being developed and the site should be reflective of these.
We also assist businesses with developing logos and branding to reflect their image, products and services.
You cannot have a web site without a domain name as this is the unique name that identifies your website, which is generally referred to as your web address or URL.
Things we recommend our clients consider when choosing a domain name:
- What is the best domain name that is both reflective of your company name and tells others a bit about your business?
- Ideally you want to keep the domain name short and easy to remember, you also want it to be easy to spell and not be confused with other domain names.
- If your company name is “Dolly Dody Ltd” producing deli goods in NZ, then the obvious choice might be www.dollydody.co.nz. – however that tells us nothing about the products or services of the company, better would be www.dollydodydeli.co.nz or even easier might be www.dollydeli.co.nz.
Other things to avoid are using hyphens in the domain name as they tend to make telling someone the website address a mouthful. Try saying www.dolly-dody-deli.co.nz out loud.
- You may also want to avoid or register both domain names if the spelling is either alternative or ambiguous.
- For instance an alternative spelling (if this was your brand name) might be www.greatsightz.co.nz instead of www.greatsights.co.nz and when telling people without spelling people could also assume you mean www.greatsites.co.nz
- What is better to have a domain name ending in .co.nz or .com? This really depends on your target market.
- If you are a NZ business which targets people in New Zealand, then the .co.nz end is best. However if you are targeting an international audience or the US then the .com domain is more familiar and therefore appropriate.
- Is your ideal domain name available? You can check on http://www.domainz.net.nz whether the domain name you want and the .co.nz or .com domains are available.
We can register your domain name for you or you can do it yourself, typically domain name registration costs $40-50 per year.
